Who was Sir John Lavery?
Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) was one of Ireland's most celebrated painters — born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and renowned for his portraits, society scenes, and depictions of Irish life. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland and the National Portrait Gallery in London. His likeness appeared on Irish banknotes until 2002.
