A Villa on the Riviera (1920) captures the particular stillness of a Mediterranean afternoon — sun-bleached walls, deep shade, the sense that time has agreed to pause. Lavery painted this during his post-war years on the French Riviera, when the south of France became a retreat for those who had lived through too much and needed beauty to recover.
There is nothing complicated about this painting. That is entirely the point.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work is hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
