A tall, bright room with plates ranged along the high shelves, and visitors at small tables taking a hot drink out of the Glasgow crowds — Sir John Lavery’s view inside the Dutch Cocoa House at the International Exhibition of 1888.

The pavilion was built by Van Houten, the cocoa makers of Weesp near Amsterdam, and stood close to the exhibition’s main entrance in Kelvingrove Park. Lavery (1856–1941) spent that summer there as the exhibition’s informal artist-in-residence and painted more than fifty small oils of its visitors, kiosks and pavilions. The exhibition’s profits went towards building Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. This canvas, 46 × 36 cm, hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh (NG 2431), bought in 1985 with the aid of the Barrogill Keith Bequest Fund.

A warm, sociable picture for a kitchen, a café corner or a breakfast room, and one of a run of 1888 Exhibition scenes alongside The Cigar Seller and The Glasgow International Exhibition. Every print is open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide. See the full John Lavery collection.
