Loch Katrine captures a moment of stillness against an enormous landscape — one figure, one parasol, the slow movement of light across water and distant hills. Lavery painted this during an autumn visit to Scotland, a country he returned to throughout his career, always finding in its landscapes a counterpoint to the social intensity of his London life. The composition is expansive yet intimate, the scale of the Highlands held in check by the humanity of the single figure at its centre.

It is a painting about being very small in a very beautiful place, and finding that entirely sufficient.

Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of his era. His work is hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
