Sailing vessels lean into a rough grey sea under a heavy sky, drawn in black chalk on blue paper that does the work of water and weather. The sheet measures 31.7 × 49.5 cm and dates from the nineteenth century. It is in the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

William Mulready (1786–1863), born in Ennis, County Clare, trained in London and became one of the best-known genre painters of the Royal Academy. Alongside his finished scenes he made drawings and studies from nature such as this one. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
