On Easter Monday 1916, Patrick Pearse stood on the steps of the GPO and read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic to a Dublin crowd that had gathered more from curiosity than conviction. Nine days later he was executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol.
Before the Rising, Pearse ran St. Enda's School in Rathfarnham, teaching in Irish at a time the language was fading from daily use. Ó Maoláin's portrait renders him in bold greens — a deliberate break from the grey solemnity most Pearse images settle into.
