The convex mirror on the wall — a device Orpen returned to throughout his career, borrowed from Van Eyck — catches the room in miniature. Everything is contained, domestic, quietly charged. Where Night is about solitude, Night No. 2 is about company — the particular feeling of being with someone in a room while the world outside goes dark.
