About this work
This portrait of the actress Máire Nic Shiubhlaigh (1883–1958) was painted by the Irish artist John Butler Yeats (1839–1922) in 1904. She was a founding member of the Abbey Theatre company and created the title role in W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory's Cathleen Ní Houlihan; she later carried dispatches during the Easter Rising. The National Gallery of Ireland catalogues her name without the fada, as Maire Nic Shiubhlaigh. The original is oil on canvas, 91 × 71 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4621), presented in 1996. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
