About the Artwork

Painted during a transformative phase of her career, Achill Horses reflects Jellett’s shift from pure abstraction to a powerful blend of Cubism, symbolism and figurative expression. After encountering Chinese art in London in 1935, she travelled to Achill Island, where the stillness of the landscape and the energy of its wild horses inspired a series of iconic works. Unlike traditional artists such as Paul Henry, Jellett did not paint what she saw — she painted the inner rhythm of Ireland’s landscape and spirit.

In this work, the horses are portrayed through geometric forms, layered colours and flowing repetition, symbolising both movement and natural order. It remains one of her most celebrated paintings and is part of the National Gallery of Ireland collection (Bequeathed by Miss R. Kirkpatrick, 1978).
