You remember standing on Howth Head, wind in your face, watching the light dance on Dublin Bay like you were the only person in the world.
Looking at the Sea
Orpen captures a solitary figure gazing out from Howth Head, the Atlantic wind moving through everything—the grass, the light, the moment itself. Painted in 1912, this work distils the peculiar Irish gift for finding vastness in a small headland, intimacy in wild weather. This is your chance to bring that wind back home.

William Orpen (1878–1931) was Dublin-born, trained at the Metropolitan School of Art, and became one of Ireland's finest interpreters of light and landscape. He moved between portraiture and plein air work, always returning to Irish coastal scenes. Orpen saw what others missed—not the postcard version, but the true face of the Irish shore.
