I Have Trodden the Winepress Alone - Mainie Jellett

Taking its title from the Book of Isaiah, this late religious composition shows a solitary Christ figure built from rhythmic planes of red, rose and violet. One of Jellett's final works before her death in 1944, it fuses Cubist-abstract form with a blaze of symbolic colour.

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) was a pioneer of Irish modernism. After studying in London and then in Paris under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she introduced Cubism and pure abstraction to Ireland, exhibited some of the first abstract paintings seen in the country, and helped found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. The original oil is held in the National Gallery of Ireland.
