In 2016, Travel + Leisure named Fanad Head one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world. It wasn't a surprise to anyone from Donegal.
Standing at the northern tip of the Fanad Peninsula, where Lough Swilly meets the open Atlantic, the lighthouse has watched over these waters since 1817. It was built in the aftermath of a shipwreck — HMS Saldanha ran aground on the rocks below on Christmas Eve, 1811, with the loss of all 253 souls on board. The sole survivor was the captain's parrot. Within six years, the lighthouse was lit.
Over two centuries later, it still works. Still turns. Still keeps the light.
