Created in the mid-1930s, A Composition shows Jellett's abstraction at its most fluid and organic: arcs of crimson, orange, emerald, violet and deep navy intersecting in harmonic motion. The rhythm remains systematic — built through the translation and rotation of forms she developed with Albert Gleizes — but the movement is looser and the palette wider, hallmarks of her mature style.
Mainie Jellett (1897–1944), born in Dublin, trained under William Orpen before studying in Paris with André Lhote and then Albert Gleizes, whose non-representational, highly geometrical painting proved a strong influence. With her friend Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to co-found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. The original hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
