A solitary figure. A vast, quiet landscape. Russet and emerald bleeding into cool blue distance. Hennessy — born in County Cork, trained in the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, and later celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic — brought an Irishman's eye to every canvas he painted. The red underpainting beneath the foliage gives the scene its warmth. The stillness gives it its weight.
Signed and dated lower right: "WJHennessy Oct 1868." Over 150 years old, and it still stops you.
