Trinity College, College Green, Dublin (1796) - James Malton
Bring a piece of Irish history into your home with this stunning reproduction art print of Trinity College, College Green, Dublin (1796) by renowned Irish artist, James Malton (1761-1803). Malton’s meticulously detailed work captures the grandeur and architectural beauty of Dublin's iconic Trinity College at the turn of the 18th century, making it a must-have for lovers of Irish culture, history, and classical art.
Malton’s greatest artistic achievement was his celebrated collection, Views of Dublin, drawn between 1790 and 1791 and published in parts over the following eight years. Considered the finest depictions of Dublin ever produced, these twenty-five topographical views stand among the best of their kind in Ireland and England during that period. Engraved using etching and aquatint techniques, Malton’s plates showcased the city’s striking architecture and unique atmosphere.
The project began with two trial prints in 1790—one of the Custom House and one of the Parliament House. Interestingly, the original Parliament House engraving included two pigs, which were later removed in the 1793 published plate due to objections from members of the Irish Parliament. Regular publication of the Views commenced in Dublin and London in 1792, with prints available in sepia and black, as well as hand-coloured editions. The series remained so popular that reprints continued into the 1820s, even as the plates became increasingly worn.
Malton personally oversaw the production process, creating the original watercolour drawings, hand-colouring some copies, and even providing outline-coloured etchings to guide the colourists he employed. His artistic focus was primarily architectural, but he also skillfully captured the essence of Dublin in the late 18th century. After completing his Dublin views, Malton relocated to London in the early 1790s, where he spent the rest of his life. Tragically, he died by suicide in 1803.
This high-quality reproduction stays true to the original masterpiece, preserving the intricate details and vibrant tones of Malton's work. Perfect for home or office, this print evokes a timeless elegance, celebrating one of Ireland’s most historic landmarks.
