A sixteen-year-old at the top of her swing, driver flung back over her shoulder, where the links run down to meet the sea. She is Alice, Lavery's step-daughter, and the small gallery watching her drive includes Hazel Lavery and the former Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith. Lavery listed them all on the back of the canvas — "my Alice" among them.

The Belfast-born Sir John Lavery painted this stretch of East Lothian shoreline nine times, staying at Westerdunes, the North Berwick home of his friend and patron Patrick Ford. Most are views from the balcony; this one, painted in 1921, takes you down onto the grass among the players — grey cloud driving across a summer sky, the beach pale on the horizon, golfers scattered along the fairway. The original oil on canvas is held in a private collection.

It hangs well in a study or hallway, and makes a considered gift for a golfer.
