Published in 1840 by Pigot & Co, this is one of the most comprehensive and beautifully produced maps of Ireland ever made. It captures the island at a pivotal moment in history — just five years before the Great Famine — showing all 32 counties, the four historic provinces of Ulster, Leinster, Munster and Connacht, and an intricate network of towns, post roads, rivers, bays and headlands from Malin Head to Mizen Head.

The hand-coloured original used distinctive tints to delineate each province, making the political and geographic structure of Ireland immediately legible. The decorative cartouche — "Pigot & Co's New Map of Ireland, embracing every recent Alteration" — speaks to the ambition of the work: a definitive record of Ireland as it stood in 1840.
