El Asha (1891) – Collector’s Edition Fine Art Print

Sir John Lavery (Irish, 1856–1941)

Step into sun-washed Tangier at the turn of 1891. During his first Moroccan journey,     Lavery sketched the Kasbah, the souk, and the rooftop vistas of the Continental Hotel.     El Asha (Bab al Assa) looks toward the gate at the south-eastern end of the Kasbah: tethered donkeys, Berber and Riffian figures slipping past whitewashed walls—an “impression     of brilliant sunshine” distilled with Irish Impressionist sensitivity.
