Portrait painter, cultural power-broker, and the first woman elected a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy.

Sarah Henrietta Purser (1848–1943) turned professional after her father's milling business failed, trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, and became the painter Ireland's intellectual and political class sat for — “I went through the British aristocracy like the measles.” She also founded An Túr Gloine, the studio that made Ireland a centre of stained glass; founded the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland in 1924; and talked the government into giving Charlemont House to the Hugh Lane collection.
