Collection: James Barry

The most intellectually ambitious Irish painter of the 18th century — and one of the most uncompromising artists in the history of British or Irish art.

James Barry (1741–1806) believed that painting could be a moral and civilising force, and he dedicated his life to proving it. Supported by Edmund Burke, trained in Rome, and the only artist to complete an entire decorative scheme for the Royal Society of Arts in London — a six-canvas cycle that remains one of the great achievements of 18th-century art. Visionary, difficult, and unmistakably Irish.
